YOD Gallery is pleased to present A-taro Matsuo’s solo exhibition "HAZAMA - Floating Residue".

A-taro Matsuo was born in Nagasaki, Japan in 1977. While studying sculpture at Kyoto University of Art and Design, he met the contemporary artist Shoichi Ida and studied under him for about ten years until Ida's death. Using burnt paper as his main material, he creates a variety of expressions while utilizing printmaking techniques.

The title of this exhibition, "HAZAMA," refers to a series of works that Matsuo has produced over the years. By burning and overlapping paper that stands for the accumulation of the past and present, an abstracted time axis emerges between "what becomes invisible" and "what becomes visible" at the same time. As the meanings of words deepened by the overlapping letters in various media and the "things that were not visible” get visualized, the viewer's imagination will be stimulated.
