Sumiko Iwaoka

“The Person Walking in Nakanoshima”

November 5, 2022 (Sat.) - November 19, 2022 (Sat.)

Opening hours:13:00 - 19:00

Closed on Sundays

YOD Gallery is pleased to present Sumiko Iwaoka's solo exhibition “The Person Walking in Nakanoshima”.

Sumiko Iwaoka has been interested in the beauty of women that has changed over time, and since then she has continued to work with an interest in the differences and discrepancies that arise when comparing the universal beauty found in works of art with the beauty created by fashion trends.

In her recent works, she has been working on a series of time slips based on the idea of "what if the people depicted in the masterpieces were alive today? In this series, he collages cut-out figures into contemporary landscapes, as if he were trying to draw connections between the people in the famous paintings who live in different times and different environments.

For this solo exhibition in Osaka, the artist will present new works based on her own observations while walking the streets of Nakanoshima, located not far from the gallery. Surrounded by waterways, the city has long flourished as a cultural and economic center, and the artist says she was inspired by the Parisian cityscapes painted by the artists Caillebotte and Jean Béraud.

She walked the streets of Nakanoshima, spreading out maps, sketching, and taking photographs, thinking about where the people depicted in her masterpieces would look more natural, or as a contrast between the past and the present.

In her paintings, the people depicted in the masterpieces transcend time and place, and are indeed present in the streets of Nakanoshima today.

We hope you will take this opportunity to view the exhibition.
